TBSP’S 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
Everyone’s got that one person in their life who loves food – cooking it, preparing it, eating it, and sharing it (sometimes). But with the myriad of kitchen tools and food gifts out there – it’s a daunting task trying to figure out what would be a welcome (or redundant) gift.
Well, never fear, because Tablespoon’s got you covered! Feel confident with your gift this Christmas with these 12 kitchen essentials from Jordan Hamons, Tablespoon’s owner and head chef.
Read on to find out why Jordan loves these kitchen goodies! (Pssst! If you use the links in our post to make a purchase, Tablespoon might get a little bit back!)
My number one kitchen tool. I’m lost without my Thermapen! It’s fast, it’s waterproof and, most importantly, it’s accurate. The classic Thermapen is my favorite, but the ThermoPop is also a good option (and makes a great stocking stuffer). Never overcook or undercook anything ever again!
2. Ice Cream Machine
If there’s an ice cream lover on your list, definitely hook them up with an ice cream machine. Sorbets, frozen yogurt, gelato – the flavor combinations are endless and so much fun to experiment with at home. My favorite is the Breville Smart Scoop (which comes with a built-in compressor), but Cuisinart makes a great, more affordable option, too.
3. Baking Steel Griddle
Homemade and frozen pizzas taste so much better baked on this multi-purpose steel griddle. If you’ve taken Tablespoon’s pizza class, you’ll know there’s no better way of getting that crispy crust. You can also freeze it to make homemade rolled ice cream, or heat it up on the stovetop and griddle pancakes, eggs and more.
4. Kitchen Scale
If you enjoy baking, you need a kitchen scale. If you don’t enjoy baking, you still need a kitchen scale. If you have a kitchen, you need a kitchen scale. Everyone needs a kitchen scale. This one is my favorite — it’s lightweight, accurate and affordable.
5. Joule Sous Vide Circulator
This is a great gadget for the cook who has everything or the kitchen geek in your life. I received one of these last year and it’s my favorite kitchen toy. The sous vide is operated through a mobile app – meaning you can cook your meals from the couch! Chefsteps also provides tons of instructional videos and recipes on their website to get you started.
6. Whirley Pop
Homemade, fresh popped popcorn is hard to beat and an easy, impressive snack to serve guests! This is the absolute best popcorn maker. It’s a unitasker, yes, but one that’s worth the space in your cupboard. If you want to go all out, order some Heirloom Appalachian Popping Corn from Anson Mills and get ready to have the best popcorn experience of your life.
And don’t forget the Heirloom Appalachian Popping Corn
7. Instant Pot Multi-Cooker
The Instant Pot has been one of the most buzzed-about cooking gadgets this year – and it is worth the hype. Especially for someone who’s busy all the time, the Instant Pot is perfect for cooking healthy meals… in an instant! I would recommend pairing it with the Dinner in an Instant Cookbook from Melissa Clark.
8. Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt
If you’ve been to one of Tablespoon’s classes, then you know Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt is our best friend. We use it in EVERYTHING. Give a box of this to everyone on your list and you’ll instantly improve their lives. We’re not joking.

9. California Olive Ranch Everyday Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Good quality olive oil is an ingredient worth investing in. Our favorite everyday olive oil is from California Olive Ranch. This is a mellow, light-tasting oil with a slight sweetness and nuttiness – I love just dipping bread into it, in addition to using it for cooking.
10. Fish Spatula
Fish spatulas are in every restaurant kitchen but is the most underrated home kitchen tool! They’re not only great for turning fish or anything delicate, but also the best tool for getting cookies off a sheet pan. Once you have one, you’ll use it for everything.
11. Extra Big & Loud Timer
It’s hard to keep track of everything you’re cooking sometimes – in a busy kitchen, you need a timer that will make sure you remember to check your oven or sauce! I keep two of them on my refrigerator. It’s big, it’s loud and it’s easy to use.
12. Le Creuset Dutch Oven
If I could only keep one pot in my kitchen, it would be this one. You can boil, braise, bake and broil in it. It’s heavy, conducts heat evenly and also looks beautiful on your stove. This is another item that’s worth the investment in your kitchen – it’ll last forever and you’ll use it all the time.
